HDFC Bank Raises Minimum Balance Requirement for New Savings Accounts

From August 1, 2025, HDFC Bank has revised the minimum balance requirement for savings accounts in metro and urban branches. This change mainly affects new customers opening savings accounts after this date.

What Has Changed?

Previously, customers in metro and urban areas needed to maintain a minimum average monthly balance (MAB) of ₹10,000. Under the new rules, the requirement has more than doubled — to ₹25,000.

If the account balance falls below this limit, penalty charges will be deducted.

This adjustment applies only to new savings accounts opened on or after August 1, 2025. Existing account holders will continue under the old limit unless the bank issues a separate update.

HDFC Bank’s New Minimum Balance Rules (Effective August 1, 2025)

Branch CategoryEarlier RequirementNew RequirementWho is Affected?
Metro / Urban₹10,000₹25,000New savings accounts after Aug 1, 2025
Semi-Urban₹5,000₹25,000New savings accounts after Aug 1, 2025
Rural₹5,000₹10,000New savings accounts after Aug 1, 2025

Why the Change?

While some government banks are relaxing their minimum balance rules, private banks like HDFC and ICICI are going the other way — increasing the amount customers must keep in their accounts.

Just last month, ICICI Bank made a similar move, raising the minimum balance for new accounts in metro/urban areas from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.

Important Points to Note:

  • These rules do not affect salary accounts, as they are generally zero-balance.
  • BSBDA accounts (Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts) also remain zero-balance and unaffected.
  • Penalty charges for non-maintenance vary depending on the branch category.
